Use of Glucosamine in arthritic conditions

Despite the widespread use of Glucosamine in arthritic conditions ,its place in the treatment of osteoarthritis is still being debated. A review of 15 studies in 2005 found a moderate effect of glucosamine on pain in patients with osteoarthritis.

However a recent study involving 200 patients found Glucosamine had no significant effect on pain, joint function, or the narrowing of the joint space that occurs in osteoarthritis, in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip. The take-home message seems to be – if you are getting relief from Glucosamine –then keep taking it, but if you have continued joint pains, see one of our GPs for an effective treatment.
