Mirrors

Mori Gallery

168 Day St, Darling Harbour

15th-24th October 2009

Opening night 14th October 6-8pm

Mirrors is an annual charity art exhibition that aims to create an understanding within the community of how body image is presented, understood and perceived within today’s society. The subject will be explored thought a plurality of mediums ranging from installation to painting and readings. The exhibition, supported by Yen Magazine, is the initiative of Rhiannon Bulley a young woman in recovery from Anorexia Nervosa. Mirrors will also provide an opportunity for every visitor to be a part of the expression through blank canvases and work stations. The space will be a creative hub that will not only give the opportunity to hear other people’s voices but also inspire individuals to listen to their own.

As in previous years, Elodie Silberstein has been commissioned to make a site specific work. Elodie creates intimate fictions through installations which often combine narrative, light effects and tableaux vivants. Her practice explores the latent tension between childhood and adulthood. For this new artwork, she is seeking real life stories by interviewing people who are facing or have overcome Anorexia Nervosa and who would be interested to share their experience in a confidential way. The final outcome will be the publication of a diary compiled from testimonies elaborated during the interviews that will reflect the complexity and heterogeneity of this mental illness. This approach resonates with some of Elodie’s initial installations in which intimacy and vulnerability were at the centre of her research, always on the borderline between public and private, fact and fiction.

All profits from the sale of nominated art works will go towards supporting The Butterfly Foundation, a non profit organisation which works to support Australians who are suffering with eating disorders Australia wide (http://www.thebutterflyfoundation.org.au/).
